Job Description

Most law firms make their paralegal feel like document processors. That's not what we're building here. Gary Austin Law handles divorce and child custody cases — the kind of work that actually changes people's lives. When a client is in the worst few years of their life, clarity matters. Responsiveness matters. Knowing someone is in their corner, organized and prepared, matters. That's the job. We're a firm that tells clients the truth about their case, prepares every filing as if it's going to be scrutinized, and treats the people we represent with real respect. We're not the biggest firm. We don't try to be. We try to be the most prepared firm in the room. We're growing — $6M revenue target by the end of 2026, 30 people on the team — and we're building the foundation now. This role is part of that foundation. WHAT THE WORK LOOKS LIKE You'll draft and file legal documents — petitions, responses, motions, declarations, and requests for orders. You'll manage case files and deadlines in a way that means nothing falls through the cracks. You'll handle client communication: answering questions, gathering information, and keeping people informed when they're anxious and need to hear from someone. You'll do legal research. You'll prep for hearings. You'll keep attorneys organized so they can show up to court with everything they need. This is a remote role — you work from home. That means you're self-directed. Nobody's checking in on you every hour. The expectation is that you hit your deadlines, communicate proactively when something's off track, and treat confidential client information like the serious matter it is. THE HARD PARTS Family law is emotionally heavy. You'll deal with clients who are stressed, grieving, angry, or overwhelmed, sometimes all at once. You won't always be able to give them the answer they want to hear. Cases move on court timelines, not client timelines, and explaining that takes patience. The volume is real. This isn't a slow-paced boutique firm. Deadlines don't move. When you're managing multiple cases in different stages, you need systems and follow-through, not reminders from someone else. If you want a job where someone tells you exactly what to do each day, this isn't it. If you're the kind of person who builds their own systems, flags problems early, and takes pride in being the most organized person on the team — keep reading. WHO BELONGS HERE Clarity means you don't leave clients guessing. You communicate in plain language, not legal jargon. You tell people what's happening, what comes next, and what they need to do. Credibility means your work is accurate. Filings go out right. Research is thorough. You catch your own mistakes before they become the attorney's problem. Responsiveness means deadlines don't surprise you — you track them. When something time-sensitive comes in, it gets handled. The team can rely on you without following up. Accountability means if something goes sideways, you own it and fix it. You don't make excuses. You don't disappear when it's hard. PAY AND GROWTH $27–$38 per hour, depending on experience. This is a full-time remote position. The firm is growing toward $6M in revenue by the end of 2026. As the team grows from where it is today to 30 people, there's real room to grow in responsibility, specialization, and pay. If you're good at this and want to build a career in family law, this is the place to do it. WHY GARY AUSTIN LAW • Remote — work from wherever you're most productive • Work that matters — clients at a genuinely hard moment in their lives, handled with respect • A firm that tells the truth — to clients about their cases, and to employees about expectations • Room to grow — we're building a team, not filling a slot THE HIRING PROCESS • Apply (5 minutes). • If your application moves forward, we'll schedule a 15-minute phone call. • We'll send you a few written questions — reply by email, within about 15 minutes. • 45-minute video interview. • Offer. Responsibilities: • Draft and file legal documents, including petitions, responses, motions, declarations, and requests for orders — accurately and on time. • Manage case files, deadlines, and tracking systems so nothing falls through the cracks across multiple active cases. • Serve as a primary contact for clients — gather information, answer questions, and keep clients informed at every stage of their case. • Conduct legal research on case-specific laws, regulations, court rules, and precedents. • Prepare attorneys for hearings — organize exhibits, assemble binders, coordinate schedules, and ensure everything needed is ready. • Communicate proactively with the legal team when issues arise, deadlines shift, or client situations change. Qualifications: Required: • 1+ year of experience in a legal environment (law firm, legal department, or court) • Strong written communication skills — you draft documents and correspond with clients daily • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook at minimum) • Reliable home office with fast, stable internet connection • U.S. work authorization • Ability to pass a background check You do NOT need: • No paralegal certificate required • No college degree required Compensation: $27 - $38 hourly
